Marketing and promotion work. There’s less disposable income. The general public are sheep. Pick your poison, but here’s some interesting numbers from album sales in the US: In 2011, 76,875 albums were released and sold at least one copy according to Nielsen Soundscan. Releases include major labels, indie, and unsigned artists. In total, those albums sold 113M copies. Of the 113M copies, 100M came from 1,500 releases. So, roughly, 2% of the releases accounted for 90% of sales. I wonder how this stacks up to the video game market.
