Community funding platform Kickstarter raised about $100M in 2011 for different start-up projects. With a goal of raising $400K to develop an old-school point and click adventure game, Double Fine became the first major studio to exclusively crowd-source funding for a new game through the service. They set a timetable of 34-days to raise the money, with pledge amounts receiving different perks. In less than 24-hours they had over 12K backers, and passed their target well into $500k.
